The declaration of an agreement projected to result in the release captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated joy and comfort across Israel.
A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced ādeep appreciationā for what it termed an āhistoric breakthroughā.
The agreementāstill requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinetāinvolves the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
So far, 148 captives have been returnedāmost as part of previous ceasefire dealsā51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostagesā Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreementās signing.
A crowd started applauding and dancing under American and Israeli bannersāone woman displaying a sign saying: āWe adore Trump.ā
āThis is a wondrous day,ā she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
āI am thrilledāit is such a comfort,ā she stated. āWe need to see them come back home to their families.ā
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the news that he would be returned home.
āTheyāre coming back!... Matan is coming home!ā Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: āMy child, you are coming home.ā
The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting āLāchaimā, which means āfor lifeā. She has advocated for the freedom of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: āMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.ā
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, with her remains recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captivesā relatives in pushing for an agreement that brings the return of everyone still detained within Gaza.
āI hardly believe this is actually happening. Weāve been waiting for such a long time and now itās here,ā he expressed.
He stated he was ābrokenā that his cousin would not be among those returning home but was āradiant with happinessā for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israelās south along with his brother.
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she experienced like she was living āa dream stateā.
āWe are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has done for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than before,ā she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
āUntil the last hostage returns, weāre not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until itās over,ā she said.
āSo many things might occur up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage back home.ā
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
