Fireworks and a Cheer to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal to Return Captives

The declaration of an agreement projected to result in the release captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated joy and comfort across Israel.

A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced ā€œdeep appreciationā€ for what it termed an ā€œhistoric breakthroughā€.

The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.

So far, 148 captives have been returned—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.

Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square

Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreement’s signing.

A crowd started applauding and dancing under American and Israeli banners—one woman displaying a sign saying: ā€œWe adore Trump.ā€

ā€œThis is a wondrous day,ā€ she expressed.

Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.

ā€œI am thrilled—it is such a comfort,ā€ she stated. ā€œWe need to see them come back home to their families.ā€

Families Celebrate with Fireworks

The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the news that he would be returned home.

ā€œThey’re coming back!... Matan is coming home!ā€ Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her daughter.

Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: ā€œMy child, you are coming home.ā€

The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.

Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts

Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting ā€œL’chaimā€, which means ā€œfor lifeā€. She has advocated for the freedom of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.

Their brother Liran Berman wrote: ā€œMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.ā€

The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, with her remains recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for an agreement that brings the return of everyone still detained within Gaza.

ā€œI hardly believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and now it’s here,ā€ he expressed.

He stated he was ā€œbrokenā€ that his cousin would not be among those returning home but was ā€œradiant with happinessā€ for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.

Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south along with his brother.

Guarded Hope from Family Members

Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she experienced like she was living ā€œa dream stateā€.

ā€œWe are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has done for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than before,ā€ she commented.

But she cautioned that it was still too soon to celebrate.

ā€œUntil the last hostage returns, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,ā€ she said.

ā€œSo many things might occur up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage back home.ā€

Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
