Government Official States Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret information in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This broader security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
