Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
